Expo 14, Gare de l’Est, Paris

The proposed exhibit

This unique set of photographs is presented at the emblematic Gare de l’Est, the point of departure of soldiers for the front. It includes the portraits taken by Didier Pazery between 1996 and 2007 of the conflict’s last surviving veterans when they were 100 or more years-old.

After Lazare Ponticelli, the last of the ‘Poilus’ (French Word War I soldiers-ndt), disappeared in 2008, Didier Pazery photographed what had been the front line and also made still lives of objects in the collections of the Meaux Intercommunality Museum of the Great War (Musée de la Grande Guerre du Pays de Meaux). These series are also part of the exhibit, along with the portraits of the last veterans.
